Gryfyn

Gryfn (Handsome Hero)
7/6/98 – 9/19/2009

Grfyn (Handsome Hero) was anything but handsome the first day I saw him at a GHG adoption day. He was missing a good bit of hair from his tail and thighs and had more than a couple of scars. In fact, I passed him by a couple of times while looking for a companion for my first grey, Sundance. A GHG volunteer led me back to his cage and we took Gryfn outside to meet Sundance. Sundance accepted Gryfn, so home we went. He surprised me by how he loved to chase a ball and play catch although, because of a racing injury, I had to limit how often he did.

Gryfn was not the brightest dog, nor the bravest but he had the most beautiful, gentle soul. He was always a gentleman, waiting for me to enter the house or deck first before he would follow. He was a guardian, watching outside while I worked in the garden and did not go inside until I came in. He was my companion on the porch in the evenings as I sat and read my book, laying at my feet on his cushion until it was time to come in for the night. And when I would sit on the floor in front of the couch, Gryfn would come over, lay beside me while I scratched the back of his neck – his favorite spot.

Gryfn was not an affectionate dog – he never gave me kisses like Sundance and he didn’t feel comfortable being touched or hugged but in his own way he demonstrated a very special and deep type of affection – one that says “I will always be there for you, beside you , watching over you.”

Gryfn’s gentle soul left us the day of the GHG Reunion, to be united with his GHG brothers and sisters who had already crossed the rainbow bridge. All the things he wasn’t didn’t matter because of what he was – the sweetest and most gentle and devoted companion.

Gryfn was the best dog, ever.
