SERA (Serazone/Joni)
04/25/2000 – 11/04/2009
We called Sera ‘The Junkyard dog’, because she could come off as one tough cookie, and had a very threatening sounding bark. Although as my sister Ann put it, she was the sweetest junkyard dog you’d ever meet. She loved all other dogs, as long as they behaved themselves, and was a little shy at first with people. Although quite a bit smaller than Fish or Kal, she was instantly ‘the boss’, and that was a good thing. Both boys needed guidance and as a long-time Momma dog, Sera was more than willing to guide them in the right direction. She learned from them as well and quickly learned to play outside and bark when we came home from work. She never really played well with toys and would always eat their heads or any appendages so we quickly learned that she had to be supervised with any toy. When Fish became ill earlier this year, Sera resumed her momma dog role and kept a very close eye on him. She would typically lay in whatever room he was in – usually with her head or paw touching him for reassurance, and would help guide him if he needed the support. She and Kal got along great too, but she seemed to think he needed much more discipline and was sure to keep him in line, as she did with any puppy or young dog she met. Sera never really liked to walk very far from home, but loved to ride in the car! Judy and Bob had fostered Sera and I was warned that she liked to bark while riding in the car. I think I underestimated what that meant and when I took her home, she barked nonstop for the 20 minute ride from Judy’s house to mine. As time went on she would bark only when we first started out or if she saw a dog walking while she was riding. It was funny, because all of the neighbors knew when Sera was heading out. Even when we started her weekly chemo treatments she would bark as we set off to the vets and bark that evening as we left to come home. Her favorite ride of all was on Corrigan Drive in South Park. Ann or I tried to take her at least weekly and she loved to greet the dogs and people walking on the paths with her bark as she rode by. Although 8 when she was adopted Sera quickly attended 2 obedience classes and really seemed to like them. We were planning to resume additional training once she was feeling better, as she really seemed to like learning. For graduation of her second class she needed to learn a trick and since she just wouldn’t do many of the ‘normal’ tricks, she learned to catch first cheerios and later small dog treats. She was amazing at it and rarely missed. Sera also learned that she loved eating popsicles, jello, and chicken broth.
Although Sera’s time as a retiree was less than a year and a half, we both tried to make the most of it. I’ll miss my sweet little ‘junkyard dog’. The last think that I told Sera Lee was to look for Fish so she’d know she was in the right place. I’m sure that Elsie, Fish and Sera are together and I will see them, and all of their fellow hounds, again someday.
