WILLOW

With heavy hearts we mourn the passing of Willow, our beloved greyhound. Born in August 1997, Willow (aka Venus) was the alpha of the pack, short in stature but big in attitude. She retired from racing in 2000 due to a broken leg. The saying “her bark was worse than her bite” truly applied to Willow. (She would bark so hard her front feet would leave the ground, and like many greyhounds she lost some teeth with age.) She was the queen of all she surveyed. Anyone or anything who failed to recognize this was simply ignored.

Willow was tough and careless of her own safety. Running flat out around the yard, chasing a bunny, lying in the snow or jumping from the retaining wall. Her favorite thing of all was a walk in the park. The larger the pack to lead, the happier she was. Nothing could deter her from a daily walk, not even the pain of cancer eating away at her leg. She hid this from us right up until her femur shattered while running down the hill one morning. Even then, we didn’t suspect the seriousness. She hardly made a sound as we carried her to the car. It took x-rays to reveal the truth. Willow came to us from the track with a broken leg and she left us with her leg, and our hearts, broken. She will be missed more than words can convey.
