The first step in our adoption process is reading the book Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood, which is available at your library or a bookstore.

Screening: This process is designed to make sure that a greyhound is the right pet for your family. This helps to ensure a placement that is successful for both the greyhound and the adoptive family.

Foster Care: Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. dogs receive loving foster care which gives the greyhound the opportunity to begin to adjust to home life. Greyhounds are introduced to stairs, housebreaking, small animals and sometimes children. By using a foster home it allows GHG to better match personality needs of both new family and greyhound.

Crates: Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. strongly recommends the use of a crate to adjust to home life. Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. offers a low cost crate for purchase.

Follow-up After Placement: Advice and assistance are always available through our GHG representative. We prefer real people giving firsthand advice based upon experience. You will not be left alone to figure out how to care for your new family member.

Civic Activity: If you desire to be active within the community Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. offers you the opportunity to do so and show off your greyhound at the same time. GHG participates in local parades including Kaufmann's "Celebrate the Seasons Parade" in Pittsburgh, local community days, charity walks and festivals. These events allow us to support worthwhile causes while you share your greyhound experiences with others, and to help educate the general public about greyhounds and their excellent suitability as pets. We also participate in pet therapy, by taking suitable greyhounds to visit those confined to nursing homes. GHG has even placed a few resident nursing home dogs.

Social Activities: Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. also participates in and conducts a number of purely social events throughout the year. This may include picnics and parties which gives everyone an opportunity to just socialize with other greyhound owners, share stories and love.

Contact With Other Adoption Agencies: Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. keeps in touch with the Erie, Buffalo, Eastern Ohio, Altoona, and Wheeling areas, among others. Information and advice is shared between groups.

Service: Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. welcomes your involvement if you choose to do so. Foster homes for incoming greyhounds are always desperately needed. We also need volunteers for Meet 'n Greets, bathing and help with the picnic committees.

Lost Greyhounds: If your greyhound is ever lost, notify Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. immediately. We will assist you in every way humanly possible to recover your pet. Local humane societies know of us and will contact us if a greyhound is recovered. Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. also offers assistance to other adoption groups that may be searching for a lost pet and they offer assistance to us as well. This "network of love" offers you the best chance of recovering your pet. But act immediately, regardless of the day or hour. We have put an identification tag on each adopted dog's collar. After you have adopted a greyhound we recommend that you purchase and attach an additional identification tag with your name and telephone number to your dog's collar.

Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. Is a Local Adoption Program: Virtually all moneys generated by Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. remains in the Pittsburgh area. The few exceptions are cases where there are bills to be paid at the source of the greyhound. We use local resources and local veterinarians. All Going Home Greyhounds, Inc. members are volunteers. No one draws any salary of any kind from Going Home Greyhounds, Inc.
