Foster Home

All greyhounds taken in by Going Home Greyhounds are placed into foster homes until they are ready to be adopted. They are in foster care for a minimum of 2-3 weeks. This gives time for each dog to start learning how to live in a home accompanied with all the challenges that go with it. The dogs are socialized, learning how to do stairs, beginning housetraining, figuring out how to play with toys, and some live with cats and/or children. This also allows us to learn about each dog so we can successfully place it in the right family situation. These dogs have lived in a very structured routine all their lives at the track. They can be very nervous the first few days, but seem to adjust to their environment rather quickly. Some take more work and patience than others, but fostering can be a very rewarding and fun experience.

GHG is always looking for new foster homes to help out. The number of dogs we take from the track depends on the availability of our foster homes. Our foster homes are not responsible for any veterinary costs, and we will supply you with a crate. Food and bedding may be supplied periodically when we receive them as donations. All you need to have is a loving heart, lots of patience, and the will to help. There is no other feeling like the first time you see your foster dog wag its tail, give you a kiss, or play with a toy!

If you are interested in fostering and have already adopted a greyhound, please contact Elaine at elaine@goinghomegreyhounds.org or leave a message on the GHG answering machine at 724-935-6298.
